Chapter 438

He narrowed his eyes and asked, “Why not?”

It was because that was her last trace of dignity. Even though her pride had been shattered and left in pieces, she

didn’t want it to be trampled on again. “Because the family I want is not someone like you. To me, you can be a

creditor, a stranger, or a superior, but you can never be my family!”

The word “family” was special to her. It was something she had longed for since childhood.

Therefore, she couldn’t let him trample on that word.

His gaze was sharp, filled with a chilling intensity, like razor blades cutting into her.

She didn’t avoid his gaze, just calmly looking at him, silently telling him he would never be her family.

Suddenly, he laughed in anger, a dazzling and mocking smile tugging at the corners of his lips. “Then let’s make a

bet. I bet that one day you will want me to be your family again and ask me to call

you ‘Rosie””

Her body trembled involuntarily. He said it with such certainty as if it were bound to happen in the future.

“That day will never come.” That was the answer she gave him.

After Jonathan left the rental home, he exited the residential area, and Carlos was waiting not far away. When he

saw Jonathan coming out, he rushed forward and asked, “Mr. Youngblood, are you heading back to the Youngblood

residence?”

“Yes,” Jonathan answered indifferently. “What did you find out from those two people?”

“All I know now is that they have received money from someone to deal with Ms. Leighton. They were told to keep

Ms. Leighton in the hospital for at least a while. However, they only contacted the person who paid them over the

phone and the money was transferred directly to their accounts. They never met the person personally,” Carlos

said, reporting the results of his investigation.

In other words, more time was needed to find the mastermind behind it.

“Keep investigating,” Jonathan ordered coldly.

“Got it,” Carlos replied and got into the car with Jonathan.

“Send someone to protect her in secret. Never let her encounter danger like today,” he said. “Also, find out if she

has any recent conflicts with anyone.”

Carlos quickly agreed again. As he looked out the window at Jonathan’s perfect side profile, Carlos couldn’t help but

sigh in

his heart.

It seemed that Jonathan was still not over Rosalie.

He couldn’t understand what kind of charm Rosalie had to make Jonathan, even after their breakup, still unable to

let go and

move on.

The next day, Rosalie went to work with her eyebags and reported to Lawrence about her inquiries with Aubrielle

and Lina the previous day.

Lawrence’s view was in line with hers.

They could bring it to court, but whether it would be accepted was at the discretion of the judge due to lack of

conclusive

evidence.

They also discussed the possibility of the police reopening the case, which remained uncertain.

“I’ll go to the police station again.” Lawrence looked at Rosalie’s prominent dark circles and said, “Thank you for

your hard work. You must be tired from working on the case. I’ll give you a day off today. Go get some rest.” Rosalie

knew Lawrence had misunderstood. In fact, she hadn’t been sleeping well because of Jonathan. Nevertheless,

Lawrence was more understanding than she had expected, which eased her worries.

Since Rosalie had a day off, she decided to visit Amelia and Aiden. After all, they would be leaving Strico soon.

However, as she walked to the office building’s entrance, she noticed a luxury car pulling up and a woman in

designer clothes getting out of the vehicle.

It was Fiona.

Rosalie was a little surprised, and Fiona spotted her now. She immediately walked over and said, “Rosalie, what a

coincidence! I was thinking of looking for you, and here you are!”

Speaking of which, Fiona had found out about Rosalie working here as an assistant lawyer through a guy named

Kayden, whom she had met at the nightclub last time.

“So what if she used to be the most promising lawyer? Now she’s merely an assistant, Fiona sneered in her heart.

However,

she continued to play nice on the surface. “Do you have time? Let’s talk.”

“Is there anything we need to talk about?” Rosalie asked. She and Fiona had never gotten along well since their

youth. Besides, she studied and later worked in Strico. They had very little interaction over the years and were not

close.

“Of course. If you’re busy, I can explain it to your firm myself. I’m sure your firm won’t be unreasonable and make

time for me,” Fiona said confidently. She seemed to think that the people at the firm would believe whatever she

said!

Little did she know that it was all because of Calvin. If she could no longer rely on him one day, she would be

nothing in the eyes of others.

Rosalie noticed Fiona’s pretentious demeanor and knew that if she refused, the latter might barge into the law firm.

So she said, “All right, let’s find a nearby place then.”

Fiona was overjoyed. She immediately picked a nearby cafe that seemed upscale in its decor and ordered two of

their most expensive coffees.

“I know you’ve broken up with Jonathan. You must not have much money. It’s my treat today. Calvin gave me a

black card and told me to spend as I please,” Fiona boasted.

Rosalie couldn’t help but be confused by Fiona’s behavior. It was clear Fiona didn’t like coffee, but here she was,

pretending to enjoy her cup of cappuccino.

She remembered that Fiona had never liked coffee and had even once said that drinking coffee was like drinking

poison.

Now, she ordered coffee and pretended to enjoy it.

“You can order something else,” Rosalie suggested.

“Oh, this coffee is quite good. I’ve developed a taste for coffee lately,” Fiona said against her will. She didn’t like

coffee, but she had noticed that many people in the upper-class coterie enjoyed it, so she wanted to drink it to

appear more refined.

It made her feel like she was on another level..

Rosalie decided not to argue any further.

After a few sips of coffee, Fiona looked at Rosalie and said, “Rosalie, we’re family. I do sympathize with you for

breaking up with Jonathan. Let me know if you need any help. I will do my best to help you.”
